Hitchcock Center for the Environment, Amherst, MA

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

We are looking for people who enjoy nature, and who are comfortable with children and adults. Sometimes the Center is quiet, but at other times it can be a busy hive of activity, especially when classes visit for field trips, or when camps are in session.

In addition to help on our trails, in the gardens and on light carpentry projects, we especially invite office help. Three hours a week really helps a lot! You can choose to work one day a week, Tuesday through Friday, 9 a.m. until Noon or Noon to 3 p.m. Volunteers answer phones, re-shelve books in the library, and occasionally help with mailings and preparing materials for craft activities. The schedule is flexible, and we always try to tailor our requests to the interests of individual volunteers. Our small, friendly staff is fun to work with and the Hitchcock Center is an upbeat place. If you would like to volunteer or want more information, please contact Katrina Burton, Office Manager, at 413-256-6006, or at katrina@hitchcockcenter.org. You may fill out our Volunteer Questionnaire and attach it to your email or send via postal mail to: Katrina Burton, Hitchcock Center, 525 S. Pleasant Street, Amherst, MA 01002. Please feel free to include your resume.

THE SALAMANDER TUNNELS MAINTENANCE DAY
Ted Watt, Hitchcock Center Educator
A Saturday in March to be determined by the weather.
To add your name to the call/email list; please call 413-256-6006 or email info [at] hitchcockcenter.org.

One of Amherst’s many claims to fame are the Henry Street amphibian tunnels, North America’s first, designed to direct spotted salamanders under the road, thus avoiding the tires of passing autos. All are invited to ready the tunnels for the annual spring migration. We’ll be raking leaves, shoveling sand and debris, clipping brush, repairing plastic mesh fences, pounding in wooden stakes, and picking up litter. Ted will give a brief presentation on the history and success of the tunnels and we will view the breeding area used by the salamanders. We will have some tools and gloves but please bring your own if you have them. All ages are welcome!

The Hitchcock Center wishes to thank Integrity Development and Construction, Kraus-Fitch Architects, and Teagno Construction for their underwriting support of our Community Programs. Their generosity and community spirit is what makes the Pioneer Valley so great!!
