SUMMARY:Homeschool II: Spring into Citizen Science
DESCRIPTION:Spring is an amazing time of year! As the natural world begins to wake up from winter there are lots of changes happening. As part of Spring into Citizen Science – we will become researchers. Working with scientists on local and national science projects\, collecting data that matters! For this homeschool series we will dive into different science projects and asking lots of questions\, such as: What do spotted salamanders do in spring? Who are our local migrating fish\, and why do they migrate? When do flowers bloom and buds burst? And more! Kids can offer a new way of looking at an issue\, so bring your scientific mind\, observation skills and unique perspective to our class. Through observation\, special guests\, field trips\, and surveys\, we will study the world around us and contribute to science while also having fun\, exploring and playing games. \nWith Jeff Mazur\nTuesdays\, 10:00am-2:00pm\nMarch 12 – June 4 (No program April 2\, 16\, May 7)\nMembers: $450/Non-members: $560

SUMMARY:Homeschool I: Animals That Build
DESCRIPTION:They don’t use blueprints or fancy tools\, but animals can be amazing builders by using natural materials like leaves\, sticks and even spit! Whether it’s for nests\, homes\, camouflage or catching prey\, animals have a lot of reasons for their architecture. At this homeschool session we will explore the construction skills of animals and build creations of our own. While we study animals\, we will also think about human architecture: we will learn about the features of Hitchcock Center’s “Living Building” and the choices we made to make our building kind to the planet. Hikes\, home projects\, games and field trips are all part of the fun! \nWith Katie Koerten\nTuesdays\, 10am – 2pm\nMarch 12 – June 4 (No program April 2\, 16\, May 7)\nMembers: $450/Non-members: $560 \nLimited to 15 participants per age group.

SUMMARY:Winter and Early Spring Birding
DESCRIPTION:Join Scott Surner for the 2019 winter and early spring birding class. This year because of Scott’s schedule we have him from January through mid- April. This will give participants an opportunity to explore the winter birdlife here in the valley as well as along the north shore of Massachusetts. As March approaches we’ll start to observe the beginning of the waterfowl migration into western Mass and still have an opportunity to track down some of the winter specialties still lingering into March. Later in March we’ll make a day trip to Moose Bog\, Vermont looking for more winter finches (Crossbills\, Evening Grosbeaks\, Siskins\, Redpolls) and focus in on the Boreal species that call Moose Bog home. (Spruce Grouse\, Black-backed Woodpecker\, Canada Jay and Boreal Chickadee)\n\n\nThe class ends with a trip back to Plum Island in mid-April\, here we’ll see more waterfowl\, early arriving Herons\, shorebirds\, hawks\, warblers\, (Yellow-rumped/Palm) and perhaps a Snowy Owl sitting in the dunes. \nEvening Classes: 6:30-8:00pm\, January 16\, February 13\, February 27\, March 20\, April 10\nField trips: see schedule below\n\nRegister here. SUMMARY:Spotted Salamander Slide Show
DESCRIPTION:Hitchcock’s mascot\, the spotted salamander\, is a fascinating creature. Ted will describe the salamander’s life history and some of its fascinating adaptations to a life largely underground; except for the risky\, spring migration journey to the breeding pools. We may even have a special salamander guest for you to view. Salamander Big Night will be coming and this is a good way to get ready for one of our community’s iconic seasonal experiences. \nTed Watt\, Naturalist with the Hitchcock Center\nTuesday\, March 5\, 7-8pm\nFREE\, Please register

SUMMARY:Big Night (Salamander Migration) Volunteer Training
DESCRIPTION:We will be observing and gathering data during Big Night\, the annual salamander migration from their year-round forest territories to their breeding pool at Henry Street in North Amherst. These are the first amphibian migration tunnels installed in North America in 1987. And we are inventorying animal movements and their use of the tunnels. Come to a brief training and get prepared to join us on big Night – the first rainy night of spring when temperature remain above 40 degrees. Then stay for the spotted salamander slide talk at 7pm. \nTuesday\, March 5\, 6-7pm\nFREE\, Please register.

SUMMARY:Nature Study Club: Dam Demolition and Riparian Restoration
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our sixth year of offering an in-depth natural history course for naturalists and citizen scientists. Each month\, in our series of nature explorations with different local naturalists\, we explore a focused\, seasonal\, natural history topic. We’ll look at nature in new ways\, varying from broad habitat-wide perspectives to the finer details of individual species. Over the course of the year we’ll visit a variety of natural habitats in the greater Pioneer Valley area. Identification skills\, ecological connections\, adaptations\, and life cycles of organisms will be the focus of our observations. Bring your curiosity and observation skills and be prepared to spend time outdoors. Dress for the weather as we rarely cancel due to inclement weather. Bring binoculars and a hand lens\, water and snacks if you would like. Carpooling to more distant locations will be encouraged. \nMarch 3: Dam Demolition and Riparian Restoration with Dana McDonald\nWe will visit the sites where 2 dams have been removed in Pelham. Dana will help us see how the renewed flow of the streams supports new habitats and new niches for stream life. You will gain deeper insight into these positive steps in restoring some of the changes we have made in our environment. \nSundays once per month\, 9am-12pm (some class times may vary depending on topics)\nFull Year: Members: $265/Non-members: $315\nRegister here

SUMMARY:What is Biomass and Why Should we Care?
DESCRIPTION:Mary Booth\, Director of Partnership for Policy Integrity\, will discuss her extensive research about Biomass. \nBiomass energy is booming because in theory\, biomass energy is renewable and “carbon neutral” and can reduce carbon emissions that accelerate global warming. Because it is considered renewable it is eligible for multiple tax credits\, subsidies\, and incentives. In practice\, however\, wood-burning biomass is the biggest carbon polluter of all\, per unit of energy generated. It is worse than coal\, worse than oil\, and worse than natural gas\, both because of the low energy to carbon ratio inherent in wood\, and also because biomass facilities generally operate at considerably lower efficiencies than fossil fueled facilities. \nBiomass plants that burn “waste” wood that would decompose and emit carbon dioxide even if not used as fuel\, are often considered as carbon neutral. Proponents argue that since this material will end up as CO2 in the atmosphere anyway\, why not use it to generate some power in the meantime? However\, it is important to remember that burning emits carbon instantaneously\, while decomposition takes years and even decades\, and in the case of the waste wood left over from logging operations\, actually builds soil carbon in the meantime. \nWhile people can argue about whether burning waste is really carbon neutral in a meaningful time frame\, there really shouldn’t be any argument about whether it’s a good idea to cut trees to burn in power plants. \nMary currently directs the Partnership for Policy Integrity’s science and advocacy work on greenhouse gas\, air pollutant\, and forest impacts of biomass energy. \nwith Mary Booth\, Director of Partnership for Policy Integrity\nThursday\, February 28\, 7 – 8:30pm\nRegistration and donations appreciated.

SUMMARY:Diversity in Environmental Organizations: Lack of Transparency and Inequities in Compensation
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Dorceta Taylor’s talk will examine the extent to which environmental organizations report diversity data. It will also examine differences in the wages of male and female as well as minority and non-minority executives in environmental organizations. \nIn 2014\, Taylor authored a report\, “The State of Diversity in Environmental Organizations: Mainstream NGOs\, Foundations & Government Agencies\,” seen as the most comprehensive report on diversity in the environmental movement. \nIt surveyed 191 environmental non-profits\, 74 government environmental agencies\, and 28 leading environmental grant making foundations to investigate their gender and racial diversity composition\, the majority of which state diversification as a “value.” The study included confidential interviews of 21 environmental leaders from diverse backgrounds and experience. \nThe failure of environmental organizations and agencies to increase recruitment and retention of people of color comes despite the disproportionate impact of environmental hazards on communities of color and the fact that people of color poll higher than whites in support for environmental issues. \nThe report can be viewed here. \nwith Dr. Dorceta Taylor\nWednesday\, February 27\, 5:30-7pm\, reception to follow\nRegistration is requested as space is limited. Free\, donations appreciated.   \nThis event is sponsored by Amherst College\, Hitchcock Center for the Environment\, a grant to Hampshire College from the Roddenberry Foundation and the Miller Whorley Center for the Environment at Mount Holyoke College.
