SUMMARY:Diversity in Environmental Organizations: Lack of Transparency and Inequities in Compensation
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Dorceta Taylor’s talk will examine the extent to which environmental organizations report diversity data. It will also examine differences in the wages of male and female as well as minority and non-minority executives in environmental organizations. \nIn 2014\, Taylor authored a report\, “The State of Diversity in Environmental Organizations: Mainstream NGOs\, Foundations & Government Agencies\,” seen as the most comprehensive report on diversity in the environmental movement. \nIt surveyed 191 environmental non-profits\, 74 government environmental agencies\, and 28 leading environmental grant making foundations to investigate their gender and racial diversity composition\, the majority of which state diversification as a “value.” The study included confidential interviews of 21 environmental leaders from diverse backgrounds and experience. \nThe failure of environmental organizations and agencies to increase recruitment and retention of people of color comes despite the disproportionate impact of environmental hazards on communities of color and the fact that people of color poll higher than whites in support for environmental issues. \nThe report can be viewed here. \nwith Dr. Dorceta Taylor\nWednesday\, February 27\, 5:30-7pm\, reception to follow\nRegistration is requested as space is limited. This will give participants an opportunity to explore the winter birdlife here in the valley as well as along the north shore of Massachusetts. As March approaches we’ll start to observe the beginning of the waterfowl migration into western Mass and still have an opportunity to track down some of the winter specialties still lingering into March. Later in March we’ll make a day trip to Moose Bog\, Vermont looking for more winter finches (Crossbills\, Evening Grosbeaks\, Siskins\, Redpolls) and focus in on the Boreal species that call Moose Bog home. (Spruce Grouse\, Black-backed Woodpecker\, Canada Jay and Boreal Chickadee)\n\n\nThe class ends with a trip back to Plum Island in mid-April\, here we’ll see more waterfowl\, early arriving Herons\, shorebirds\, hawks\, warblers\, (Yellow-rumped/Palm) and perhaps a Snowy Owl sitting in the dunes. \nEvening Classes: 6:30-8:00pm\, January 16\, February 13\, February 27\, March 20\, April 10\nField trips: see schedule below\n\nRegister here. Girls into the Wild is designed to get girls outside\, playing and engaging with nature in their own way. SUMMARY:Winter and Early Spring Birding
DESCRIPTION:Join Scott Surner for the 2019 winter and early spring birding class. This year because of Scott’s schedule we have him from January through mid- April. This will give participants an opportunity to explore the winter birdlife here in the valley as well as along the north shore of Massachusetts. As March approaches we’ll start to observe the beginning of the waterfowl migration into western Mass and still have an opportunity to track down some of the winter specialties still lingering into March. Later in March we’ll make a day trip to Moose Bog\, Vermont looking for more winter finches (Crossbills\, Evening Grosbeaks\, Siskins\, Redpolls) and focus in on the Boreal species that call Moose Bog home. (Spruce Grouse\, Black-backed Woodpecker\, Canada Jay and Boreal Chickadee)\n\n\nThe class ends with a trip back to Plum Island in mid-April\, here we’ll see more waterfowl\, early arriving Herons\, shorebirds\, hawks\, warblers\, (Yellow-rumped/Palm) and perhaps a Snowy Owl sitting in the dunes. \nEvening Classes: 6:30-8:00pm\, January 16\, February 13\, February 27\, March 20\, April 10\nField trips: see schedule below\n\nRegister here. Together we will run\, jump\, climb\, invent\, imagine\, play and be a free-range kids all while developing self-confidence and learning valuable social skills. During Winter Nature Play\, we make snow forts\, sled\, find animal tracks\, play games in the dark and use our imagination as we explore the wooded trails and fields. SUMMARY:Nature Study Club: Mammal Tracking - Program Filled
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our sixth year of offering an in-depth natural history course for naturalists and citizen scientists. Each month\, in our series of nature explorations with different local naturalists\, we explore a focused\, seasonal\, natural history topic. We’ll look at nature in new ways\, varying from broad habitat-wide perspectives to the finer details of individual species. Over the course of the year we’ll visit a variety of natural habitats in the greater Pioneer Valley area. Identification skills\, ecological connections\, adaptations\, and life cycles of organisms will be the focus of our observations. Bring your curiosity and observation skills and be prepared to spend time outdoors. Dress for the weather as we rarely cancel due to inclement weather. Bring binoculars and a hand lens\, water and snacks if you would like. Carpooling to more distant locations will be encouraged. \n\nFebruary 10: Mammal Tracking  with Kathy Dean\nPut on your woolies and join us for a morning of following some of our local mammals in their travels through the forest. Kathy will help us distinguish different tracks and also the patterns in the snow as the animals move. DESCRIPTION:Sometimes you just need to run\, explore and play! That’s what we do at Girls into the Wild\, and lots more. Girls into the Wild is designed to get girls outside\, playing and engaging with nature in their own way. Instructor Katie Koerten strives to offer games and activities that each girl can participate in at her own comfort level\, from climbing trees\, to playing camouflage in the forest\, to running and whooping wildly through fields. Even in winter we’ll spend the entirety of the afternoon outside so bring your warmest layers and come have some snowy fun! Our Discovery Day programs are appropriate for everyone from first time to veteran homeschoolers\, and we welcome almost-6 year olds who are interested in joining our class in the spring. At this program we will go on a outdoor quest to find a treasure hidden in the woods. DESCRIPTION:Public Building Tours \nDid you know the Hitchcock Center is a Living Building? It is designed to model systems in nature\, it’s net zero energy and water\, has composting toilets\, and has been made with responsibly sourced non-toxic materials. Bring your questions and come find out what good can look like in the built environment at one of our bi-monthly tours.
