SUMMARY:9am-12pm Nature All Year: Insect Tracks and Signs
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an in-depth natural history course to develop your naturalists skills. Each month\, in our series of nature explorations with different local naturalists\, we explore a focused\, seasonal\, natural history topic. We’ll look at nature in new ways\, from broad habitat perspectives to close details of individual species. Over the course of the year we’ll visit a variety of natural habitats in the greater Pioneer Valley area. Identification skills\, ecological connections\, adaptations\, and life cycles of organisms will be the focus of our observations. Bring your curiosity and observation skills. Dress for the weather for 3 hours as we rarely cancel due to inclement weather. Bring binoculars and a hand lens\, water and snacks if you would like. These will be outdoor only programs and please bring masks and plan to wear them when within 6 feet of others. \nWith Charley Eiseman at Montague Plains\nJoin the author of Tracks & Sign of Insects and Other Invertebrates for an exploration in search of galls\, leaf mines\, egg cases\, cocoons\, webs\, nests\, burrows\, and other traces of insects\, spiders\, slugs\, and worms! \nBiography: Charley Eiseman is a freelance naturalist based in western Massachusetts and working throughout New England. He is the lead author of Tracks & Sign of Insects and Other Invertebrates and has certified vernal pools for many local towns.

The critters who make their home in the stream demonstrate a beautiful web of life\, from algae and microscopic organisms\, to insect larvae and amphibians. We’ll begin at the Hitchcock Center and use our limnology lab tools to practice techniques for observing small aquatic creatures and learning about their unique life cycles and adaptations. We’ll then head to the Fort River at Groff park\, where we will collect and observe several varieties of invertebrates that depend on this habitat. \nwith Helen Ann Sephton\nMinimum Age 5\nFridays\, 10am–12noon\nSeptember 4–October 16 (no program September 11) \nFee per Child:  Tier A-$24 per trip  |  Tier B-$19 per trip  |  Tier C-$14 per trip | Tier D- $7\nFee per Adult:  Tier A-$28 per trip  |  Tier B-$23 per trip  |  Tier C-$18 per trip | Tier D- $9\nLimited to 12 participants. SUMMARY:Lawns Into Meadows Book Launch and Virtual Meadow Tour followed by Q&A
DESCRIPTION:In a world where lawns wreak havoc on our natural ecosystems\, landscape designer Owen Wormser encourages another approach. Owen’s recently released book\, Lawns Into Meadows\, Growing a Regenerative Landscape\, explains how to plant an organic meadow that’s right for your site. \nMeadows create wildlife and pollinator habitat. They’re low maintenance and low cost. They have a built-in resilience that helps them weather climate extremes and they can sequester loads of carbon. They’re also really beautiful all year long. \nIn this virtual event\, Owen will introduce you to his book and take participants on a tour through Bobbie’s Meadow at the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art. Owen designed this meadow now in its second season. He’ll show us some of the plants and talk about the ecology of the meadow\, including how it actively provides habitat to many pollinators and other animals. \nBooks available for curbside pick up at the Hitchcock Center (please call to arrange a pick up time) and the Eric Carle Museum’s book shop. \nThursday\, July 30th 7pm – Zoom link provided with registration. \nSuggested Donation of $10 \nCo-sponsored by the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art\nRegistration required \n\nAuthor bio:\nOwen Wormser was born and raised off the grid in rural Maine. His interest in plants and the natural world led him to pursue a degree in landscape architecture. In 1998 Owen moved to western Massachusetts to start his first landscape design and installation service. Since then he has built hundreds of regenerative landscapes influenced by his study of horticulture\, permaculture\, organic agriculture\, and ecology. \n\n\n \n\n\nIn 2010\, Owen started Abound Design\, which provides design and installation services with a focus on creating sustainability\, regeneration\, and beauty. Six years later\, he co-founded Local Harmony\, a nonprofit that promotes local regenerative projects and has overseen the planting of many thousands of native perennials. His first book\, Lawns Into Meadows\, Growing a regenerative landscape\, was released July\, 2020.

DESCRIPTION:A pond is much more than frogs and fish! It demonstrates a beautiful web of life from algae and microscopic organisms to insect larvae and amphibians. We will use our limnology lab tools to practice techniques for observing small aquatic creatures and learning about their unique life cycles and adaptations. At the pond\, we will collect and observe several varieties of invertebrates that depend on this habitat. \nJoin one of our talented Hitchcock Center educators and choose among many fun-filled and hands-on field trips designed for the whole family (age levels for children vary as indicated below). Each field trip is two hours in length. Consider extending the trip by packing a picnic lunch and staying after the program ends!
