SUMMARY:Nature All Year: Ecology and Management of Montague Sand Plains
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our sixth year of offering an in-depth natural history course for naturalists and citizen scientists. Each month\, in our series of nature explorations with different local naturalists\, we explore a focused\, seasonal\, natural history topic. We’ll look at nature in new ways\, varying from broad habitat-wide perspectives to the finer details of individual species. Over the course of the year we’ll visit a variety of natural habitats in the greater Pioneer Valley area. Identification skills\, ecological connections\, adaptations\, and life cycles of organisms will be the focus of our observations. Bring your curiosity and observation skills and be prepared to spend time outdoors. Dress for the weather as we rarely cancel due to inclement weather. Bring binoculars and a hand lens\, water and snacks if you would like. Carpooling to more distant locations will be encouraged. \nNovember 17: Ecology and Management of Montague Sand Plains with Glenn Motzkin\nWe will explore the sand plain habitat with an eye for the unique plant communities found there. Much of the plains are managed by the State and Glenn will explain the thinking behind the recent timber cuts on the plains and how this supports some of the rare species that are found there. \nSundays once per month\, 9am-12pm (some class times may vary depending on topics)\nSign up for the remainder of the year: $140 members/$170 non-members.\nOr\, $30 per session.\nRegister here

SUMMARY:FIBERSHED: Woven Together | Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:On exhibit November 4\, 2019–January 3\, 2020.\nOpening reception Saturday\, November 9\, 11am–1pm.\n \nFIBERSHED: Woven Together\, celebrates the successful production of bioregional wool fabric that was fashioned into original designs by ten local craftspeople. \nFrom bespoke shoes to flat caps and everything in between\, ten expert artisans turned the flat fabric into one-of-a-kind\, wearable items.  Alongside the completed apparel\, the fiber\, yarn\, cloth\, and narrative storytelling materials will be on display to educate the public about producing local textiles—introducing them to the land\, the people\, and businesses integral to the journey. \n“The Western Mass Fibershed project was an interesting opportunity to consider materials in a new way and to stretch what I considered to be materials I could work with: locally woven wool\, which I did not know existed\, and discarded bicycle rubber\, which I have not before used as decoration.” —Daphne Board\, Shoemaker. \n \nThe Holyoke Bicycle Shoe was created as part of the Western Massachusetts Fibershed by Daphne Board of Holyoke\, MA. \n\nWestern Mass Fibershed received a microgrant for this debut project from Fibershed California\, an organization that develops regional fiber systems that build soil & protect the health of our biosphere. With this funding\, the Fibershed embarked on a two-part mission: first\, to navigate new territory to map the process and potential for future bio-regional cloth-productions and second\, to inspire\, educate\, and generate interest for locally sourced\, sustainable materials. \nUniquely situated\, regional resources enabled the metamorphosis from farm to fabric within a 50-mile radius!  This project aligns with Hitchcock Center’s commitment to explore\, “the interconnections between the health of humans and ecosystems” and more. \n \n“Draped Cocoon” is a mid-weight jacket inspired by metamorphosis. Designed by Anna Gilbert-Duveneck of Framingham\, MA. Photo by Travis Widrick \n\nThe exhibit opens on Monday\, November 4 with an opening reception Saturday\, November 9 from 11 a.m.–1 p.m. Meet the Fibershed founders\, farmers\, spinners\, weavers\, and designers who are involved with this premiere Fibershed project and others interested in sustainable practices. \nFor questions and to learn more about this project please contact WMF co-founder Michelle Parrish\, 413-461-5588. Parrish is a natural dyer\, weaver\, spinner\, and blogger living and working in the Connecticut River Valley of Western Massachusetts.

SUMMARY:Landscape and Infrastructure: Re-imagining the Pastoral Paradigm Book Release with author Meg Vickery
DESCRIPTION:In her new book local author and lecturer of the History of Art and Architecture Meg Vickery traces the roots and uncovers the significance of the productive activities and elements of pastoral traditions in art and designed landscapes\, clearly documenting the persistent and sometimes difficult relationship of aesthetics and production. With rising demand for clean energy\, clean water\, and locally-grown food\, this study offers a historical perspective on how such systems can be integrated into our suburban and urban areas. Vestigial elements of the pastoral tradition have long held aesthetic sway in our suburbs\, cities and national parks\, both in Britain and America. Now\, as new energy- and water-related projects encroach on these spaces\, remnants of the pastoral play a crucial role in convincing neighborhood residents\, municipal leaders\, and energy companies or water authorities of the benefits of a neighboring infrastructure. This book investigates the history of that tradition and highlights the advantages it brings as we re-imagine infrastructure in the twenty-first century.\n \nThursday\, November 7\, 7-8:30pm\nLight refreshments served\nFREE\, registration appreciated
