DESCRIPTION:The Hitchcock Center’s 17th Annual 2016 Biothon starts May 13th! You’ve heard of marathons\, walk-a-thons\, and dance-a-thons: this is our version. Biothon is a fundraiser for the Hitchcock Center’s environmental education programs. And it’s a fun and educational way to document the biodiversity of our region. Biothon is a team event during peak spring biodiversity. \nTeams choose the time\, location\, and species to count: birds\, plants\, mammals\, reptiles and amphibians\, insects\, or everything! Teams collect pledges in support of their outing. Start your own team\, or join an existing team. Team Members of all skill levels are welcome. Join the Biothon fun and document biodiversity\, learn new species\, and raise funds for Hitchcock (and win prizes\, too). \nTeams will be out identifying species in the Valley at specific sites for any time period (up to 24-hours) on Friday\, May 13 – Sunday\, May 15 or on Friday\, June 3 – Sunday\, June 5. Teams choose their day and time\, where to go out\, and what species to count: anything with fur\, feathers\, scales\, or leaves! \nJoin Biothon as a team leader! Why do coyotes howl at night? Is the cardinal pecking my window because it’s angry? Do the two crayfish you caught like each other? We’ll practice scientific observation and experimentation\, with both the animals that live with us here at the Hitchcock Center and the wildlife that shares our neighborhood. We will focus on looking at each animal (including people!) as a living thing with unique needs and characteristics that influence how it acts and how we can best respect and care for it. SUMMARY:Explore the Hitchcock Center’s New Grounds
DESCRIPTION:Pete McLean\, Education Director at Book & Plow Farm and Ted Watt\, Hitchcock Center Naturalist\nSaturday\, June 18\, 9am-noon \nModeled on the bioblitz approach to gathering extensive data about specific places\, we’ll spend 3 focused hours exploring the grounds around the Hitchcock Center’s upcoming new Living Building Challenge home. Although the new Center won’t be open until autumn 2016\, we will explore the grounds around the construction site\, noting the species we see – both birds and plants. Participants will spend an hour and a half each with Pete and Ted as they guide our explorations and help identify our finds. You’ll contribute significantly to establishing a baseline of what nature looks like at the debut of our new home. Dress for sun\, ticks\, a bit of poison ivy\, and be prepared to get off trail\, young people grade 4 and up welcome with adult companion.
