SUMMARY:Animal Tracks and Signs at the Quabbin
DESCRIPTION:George Leoniak\, tracker\nSunday\, December 13\n9am-2pm \nCome and enjoy an exciting day of animal tracking in the north Quabbin Reservation with professional wildlife tracker George Leoniak. We’ll be exploring the forests looking for signs of animals as they prepare for winter. We’ll also search for tracks along the sandy shores of the reservoir. There could possibly be snow to track on but\, with or without snow\, there will be plenty of animal signs for us observe and learn from. George has been passionately exploring the subject of animal tracking for over 20 years. In 2010 he earned his Senior Tracker certificate from Cybertracker Conservation and now conducts track and sign evaluations for them. To learn more about George check out his website: http://www.leoniaktracking.com and Blog: http://trackingthoughts.com Participants should bring a lunch and drink.  We’ll be in the field for the full five hours so dress appropriately for the seasonal weather conditions. Warm\, sturdy boots are recommended. Members $32 / Non-members $40\, Space is limited\, please call to register.

DESCRIPTION:Ted Watt and Nancy Goodman\, Naturalists and Tree Enthusiasts\nSunday\, November 22\n10 am-1pm \nJoin us for a leisurely hike along a dirt road in the flood plain near Mitch’s Marina in Hadley. We’ll see a wide variety of species that are adapted to this unique habitat and explore a wonderful hiking area that may be new to many. Bring binoculars (useful for high elevation “tree-ing”)\, snacks and water and wear comfortable walking shoes. The road is very gentle with easy footing. Directions to meeting point will be provided upon registration. Members $20/ Non-members $25. Space is limited\, please call to register.

DESCRIPTION:Dan Ziomek\, local birder and naturalist\nSaturdays\, November 7 and/or 21\n8pm-10pm \nOwls are setting up their winter and spring breeding territories right now. And they do that by hooting or making other cool sounds in the night! We’ll learn what the calls of the different species sound like and then go out and see if we can locate them vocalizing in the dark. We’ll visit a variety of habitats and try to call some in closer. Maybe we’ll even get lucky and catch a glimpse of one! Dress INCREDIBLY warm because we’ll be standing around in the dark a lot. Bring your sharp ears\, a flashlight\, and a thermos of something hot to drink. We’ll meet at the Hitchcock Center and carpool to several locations. Members $10 / Non-members $12 per night\, youth 8 and older welcome with an adult. Space is limited\, please call to register.

SUMMARY:Fungi as Global Citizens
DESCRIPTION:Michael Hood\, Associate Professor and Chair of the Biology Department\, Amherst College\nTuesday\, November 17\, 7-9pm \nMichael researches the impacts of diseases in natural populations\, with a main focus on fungi. He loves discussing this diverse kingdom and the important functions of fungi in the environment. Both saviors and villains\, fungi are vital to many ecosystem services and the establishment of natural communities; while other groups cause diseases in plants and animals\, some rivaling the devastation of The Great Plague. This talk will go beyond fungi as familiar mushrooms\, to discuss ecological interactions of fungi\, whether inducing sex changes in plants\, lassoing microscopic eelworms\, or forming the oldest known symbiosis of life on land. Join Michael for a wide-ranging\, illustrated talk that will reveal the hidden lives of these amazing organisms. Find out more about our local mushrooms through other Hitchcock Center programs this fall. Donations and registration appreciated
