SUMMARY:Citizen Science: Autumn Colors and Leaf Drop
DESCRIPTION:Tim Zimmerman\, Visiting Asst. Professor of Cognition and Education\, Hampshire College\nTed Watt\, Hitchcock Center Naturalist\n Wednesday\, September 16\, 7-9 pm \nTim has been developing new methods of submitting citizen science data using the internet. We are very excited about the possibilities of expanding public awareness about environmental issues and deepening connections to the natural world using these technologies. Observing trees\, the coloring and dropping of leaves in autumn\, helps increase our awareness of complexities and beauties in nature. Recording our observations online can contribute to a deeper understanding of some local effects of a changing climate. Come learn about this project and how you can get involved. All you need is a tree (one or more?) and the ability to see colors. Participants will be asked to choose one branch on one tree and record their observations of the leaves on that branch over the course of the fall.  We’ll explain everything else. Families welcome\, recommended for young people grades 3 and up. • FREE • Registration appreciated

SUMMARY:Homeschool II
DESCRIPTION:with Patrick O’Roark\, Hitchcock educator\nTuesdays\, September 15 – December 1 (9 classes)\n(No class 10/6\, 11/3 and 11/10)\n10:00am-2:00pm\nAges 9-12 \nJoin us this fall as we travel deep into the past to explore the age of the dinosaurs. Dinosaurs were one of the dominant groups of animals on Earth for 140 million years – that’s 700 times longer than modern humans have existed! Our class will take a journey from dinosaur’s humble beginnings as dog-sized predators\, through their glory days when herbivores the size of a house battled with hungry carnivores longer than a school bus\, all the way to their sudden extinction. Through outdoor activities\, crafts\, games and field trips we’ll become familiar with the amazing variety of dinosaur groups\, become detectives of life past as we learn the techniques of paleontology\, and examine the evidence of dinosaurs that lived right here in western Massachusetts. \nOnline registration opens Tuesday\, June 16. This program is part of a series and is not open as a drop-in class. Class meets: September 15\, 22\, 29\, October 13\, 20\, 27\, November 17\, 24\, December 1. Space is limited. SUMMARY:Tour of Amherst Wastewater Treatment Facility
DESCRIPTION:We think it is good to know where our water comes from and where it goes. We just turn on our faucets and flush our toilets but what’s the infrastructure that makes that possible. Come tour the facility that receives Amherst’s wastewater and see what happens there. At this special facility tiny microorganisms normally present in wastewater are given optimum conditions to feed on biodegradable matter. As the microorganisms grow\, they digest large amounts of biodegradable matter and convert some of it into carbon dioxide and water\, two relatively harmless byproducts. The rest of the biodegradable matter consumed by the microorganisms remains in their cell bodies\, causing them to grow even more and are then removed from the wastewater together with much of the waste materials. FREE but space is limited\, please call to register.
