Together we will run\, jump\, climb\, invent\, imagine\, play and be a free-range kids all while developing self-confidence and learning valuable social skills. During Winter Nature Play\, we make snow forts\, sled\, find animal tracks\, play games in the dark and use our imagination as we explore the wooded trails and fields. SUMMARY:Nature Study Club: Dam Demolition and Riparian Restoration
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our sixth year of offering an in-depth natural history course for naturalists and citizen scientists. Each month\, in our series of nature explorations with different local naturalists\, we explore a focused\, seasonal\, natural history topic. We’ll look at nature in new ways\, varying from broad habitat-wide perspectives to the finer details of individual species. Over the course of the year we’ll visit a variety of natural habitats in the greater Pioneer Valley area. Identification skills\, ecological connections\, adaptations\, and life cycles of organisms will be the focus of our observations. Bring your curiosity and observation skills and be prepared to spend time outdoors. Dress for the weather as we rarely cancel due to inclement weather. Bring binoculars and a hand lens\, water and snacks if you would like. Carpooling to more distant locations will be encouraged. \nMarch 3: Dam Demolition and Riparian Restoration with Dana McDonald\nWe will visit the sites where 2 dams have been removed in Pelham. Dana will help us see how the renewed flow of the streams supports new habitats and new niches for stream life. Girls into the Wild is designed to get girls outside\, playing and engaging with nature in their own way. Join usfrom 1-3:00 pm on February 23rd for the chance to learn how you can help make buildings better for everyone. This event will include a discussion with a panel of experts on how to improve building codes\, a breakout session to connect with other advocates in your community\, and the option to tour the Hitchcock Center — a thriving net zero building right on Hampshire College’s campus. Whether you are an experienced codes advocate\, or just curious about how to make buildings more efficient\, more equitable\, and safer for our communities\, we hope that you will join MCAN\, Mothers Out Front\, and Climate Action Now for our Better Buildings Workshop. \nwith MA Climate Action Network\, Mothers Out Front\, and Climate Action Now\nSaturday\, February 23\, 1-3pm\nRegistration requested.\n\nPanel includes: \n\nSenator Jo Comerford\nJo knows how government works. She has first-hand experience in cracking open complex budgets\, helping to broker and implement public policy\, and leading strategic and game-changing initiatives in strong partnership with lawmakers at the national\, state\, and local levels.\n\nQuinton Zondervan\, City Councillor in Cambridge\, MA\nQuinton Zondervan is a tech entrepreneur\, non-profit leader and community activist currently serving his first term on the Cambridge City Council. An environmentalist since his undergraduate days\, Quinton is passionate about protecting our natural environment and increasing our sustainability through systemic transformation. His main priorities on the Council are affordable housing\, sustainable transportation and taking action on climate change.\n\nDarren Port\, Buildings & Community Solutions Manager at Northeast Energy Efficiency Partnerships\nDarren is charged with developing and implementing policy strategies for the advancement of the Northeast regions adoption of\, and compliance with\, progressive building energy codes. Additionally\, Darren advocates for policies to rate and disclose building energy performance. Prior to joining NEEP\, Darren was the Green Building Administrator and Green Code Specialist for the State of New Jersey.  Nationally\, he serves as an appointed member on several code and standards making committees including\, the International Green Construction Code (IGCC) and ASHRAE 189.1.\n\n\n\nRebecca Winterich-Knox\, Local Clean Energy Organizer at Mass Climate Action Network.\nRebecca is passionate about working with advocates in communities across Massachusetts to make building codes more efficient\, more equitable\, and safer for everyone.

But more and more\, studies show that children need “rough and tumble” outdoor play in order to develop their sensory\, motor\, and executive functions. Disturbingly\, a lack of movement has been shown to lead to a number of health and cognitive difficulties\, such as attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)\, emotion regulation and sensory processing issues\, and aggressiveness at school recess break. So\, how can you ensure your child is fully engaging their body\, mind\, and all of their senses? \nUsing the same philosophy that lies at the heart of her popular TimberNook program—that nature is the ultimate sensory experience\, and that psychological and physical health improves for children when they spend time outside on a regular basis—author Angela Hanscom offers several strategies to help your child thrive\, even if you live in an urban environment. Today it is rare to find children rolling down hills\, climbing trees\, or spinning in circles just for fun. We’ve taken away merry-go-rounds\, shortened the length of swings\, and done away with teeter-totters to keep children safe. Children have fewer opportunities for unstructured outdoor play than ever before\, and recess times at school are shrinking due to demanding educational environments. DESCRIPTION:Just because it’s cold outside\, doesn’t mean your kids need to stay inside to play. Have them join Hitchcock’s Nature Play Afterschool Program\, which is designed to let kids be kids. Together we will run\, jump\, climb\, invent\, imagine\, play and be a free-range kids all while developing self-confidence and learning valuable social skills. During Winter Nature Play\, we make snow forts\, sled\, find animal tracks\, play games in the dark and use our imagination as we explore the wooded trails and fields. Instructor Aemelia Thompson (Monday’s) and Jeff Mazur (Wednesdays) provides a safe structure for children to explore nature and encourages children to stretch their limits as they balance on logs\, hold salamanders\, or co-create new games with their peers. \n\n\nwith Jeff Mazur\nWednesdays\, 3:30-5:30pm\nWinter Session: January 9 – March 20\, 2019 (no class February 20)\nExtended Day: March 6\, 1:30pm-5:30pm\nAges 6-9\, Grades 1-3\nMembers: $250/Non-members: $300 \n\n\nLimited to 10 participants.
