SUMMARY:Nature Study Club: Bark: Getting to Know Trees in Winter
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our sixth year of offering an in-depth natural history course for naturalists and citizen scientists. Each month\, in our series of nature explorations with different local naturalists\, we explore a focused\, seasonal\, natural history topic. We’ll look at nature in new ways\, varying from broad habitat-wide perspectives to the finer details of individual species. Over the course of the year we’ll visit a variety of natural habitats in the greater Pioneer Valley area. Identification skills\, ecological connections\, adaptations\, and life cycles of organisms will be the focus of our observations. Bring your curiosity and observation skills and be prepared to spend time outdoors. Dress for the weather as we rarely cancel due to inclement weather. Bring binoculars and a hand lens\, water and snacks if you would like. Carpooling to more distant locations will be encouraged. \n\nJanuary 13: Bark: Getting to Know Trees in Winter with Michael Wojteck\nMichael will help us look more closely at the bark of local tree species. Furrows\, ridges\, plates and more will provide a vocabulary and train your eye for these characters. You’ll gain confidence in your skills at identifying trees without their leaves. Michael is the author of Bark: A Field Guide to Trees of the Northeast and has lots to share about these wonderful plants! \nSundays once per month\, 9am-12pm (some class times may vary depending on topics)\nFull Year: Members: $265/Non-members: $315\nRegister here

SUMMARY:Looking East Community Gallery Exhibit Opening
DESCRIPTION:Looking East\nArtist: Jay Alexander\nOn exhibit January – March 15\, 2019. Exhibit opening January 12\, 11am-1pm.\n \nJay Alexander’s paintings present a contemporary reinterpretation of several dominant themes in classical Chinese painting: the plum\, orchid\, flowering plants\, birds\, and landscapes. He brings his experience and technique to these ancient venerable genres\, depicting the above subjects in the moods\, seasons and light of his environment. These subjects are expressed through his deep attachment to the natural world filtered through a vast body of theory with metaphysical underpinnings—that art is a spontaneous expression\, immediate and irrevocable as life itself\, where the essential truth of a painted object is the operation of the spirit (Chi) in life movement (Zheng tung). \n \nPlum Blossom. Jay Alexander \n\nThis approach to painting is engendered and fostered by the artist’s media—a very porous rice paper combined with the drips\, washes\, ink blots and calligraphic strokes of ink and watercolor. The washes of transparent color capture light and atmosphere\, the bleeding of the rice paper adds expression and accidental effect: lotus pods leak out ink\, blossoms dissolve into branches and mist\, birds gaze into the diffuse sunlight in a watery\, vague environment. \nForm and dissolution—nothing is fixed or stable in this world of water\, ink and paper—layers dissolve into one another and the atmosphere envelopes the subjects in a vibrant\, fluid\, luminous world. Jay Alexander has expanded and reinterpreted these genres into a personalized vision of his environment using the simple media of brush\, ink\, and watercolor \nAbout Jay Alexander\nJay Alexander studied Far Eastern languages\, art\, and architecture at Harvard University and the University of Massachusetts. After finishing his studies\, he started a small graphics company\, and for many years designed and illustrated medical and science college textbooks and developed accompanying animations. Drawing on this graphics experience and his studies in Far Eastern art\, he has devoted himself to expression with the simple media of ink\, watercolor\, and rice paper in the literati tradition of the scholar-painter\, while incorporating aspects of contemporary graphic design. He has exhibited his work in many local venues in the Amherst area and has been selected in several juried shows. His work has appeared in many literary/art publications—The Shanghai Literary Review\, Remembered Arts\, The Hopper Magazine and the A3 Review.

SUMMARY:Christmas Bird Count for Kids and Families
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, December 16\n2-4pm\nFree\, Registration appreciated\n \nDo you want to learn more about birds? Would you like to contribute to science? Join birdwatchers all over America in the Christmas Bird Count (CBC)! The Hitchcock Center is hosting its first ever CBC for kids and their families on Sunday\, December 16 from 2:00-4:00pm. The CBC is a 118-year old event in which bird lovers of all ages and skill levels count all the birds they see in a 24-hour period in December. At this program\, we’ll meet at the Hitchcock Center for an indoor program about how to recognize common birds\, followed by an outdoor bird count. Educator Katie Koerten will facilitate a bird count for kids and their families on the grounds of the Hitchcock Center – we’ll count every bird we see! Stay as long as you wish. Later that evening she will report the data we collect at the official CBC compilation meeting. Don’t miss this opportunity to contribute to a real bird census! This event is rain\, slow\, sleet or shine. Families may stay for as much time as they wish but we recommend you come for the indoor portion in order to get introduced to the common winter species we are likely to see. Binoculars welcome but not required.

SUMMARY:How to Talk About Environmental Issues
DESCRIPTION:Most people spend very little time talking about environmental issues with their colleagues\, friends and family members. Yet research shows that these are exactly the conversations we need to be having in order to promote greater public engagement with the conservation and sustainability challenges we face. Join Ezra Markowitz Umass professor and researcher of Climate Ethics and Intergenerational decision-making and the environment. In this talk\, he will present some of the research he and others have done on the key role of interpersonal communication—everyday social interactions and conversations—in conservation efforts. He will then highlight how this work can be used to support pro-environmental decision-making across a variety of issues. \nwith Ezra Markowitz\, Assistant Professor of Environmental Decision-Making \nDonations and registration appreciated

SUMMARY:Repair Public: Fixery through Community - CANCELED
DESCRIPTION:Repair Public is an exercise in community resourcefulness. The basic idea is to encourage people to learn how and/or where to fix broken items instead of tossing them into a landfill and buying replacements. The participants and facilitators are local community members just like you. You bring a broken item that you want help repairing as well as a willingness to try to fix it. There will be repair facilitators on-hand to help you figure out how to fix your treasure\, each with one or more areas of specialty. We’ll have various tools available for use\, as well as some basic supplies like screws\, tape\, glue\, wire nuts\, needles\, threads\, and probably appliance cord with some plug-ends. With all these ingredients\, we intend to help you repair whatever you decide to bring in – To learn more https://repairpublic.org/. \nDonations and registration appreciated
