SUMMARY:Biothon Outing: Hadley Area
DESCRIPTION:With Scott Surner\nRegister here\nScott’s birding courses sell out fast every spring – here’s a second chance to get out on a bird walk with Scott this season! As part of the Biothon\, Hitchcock’s annual spring biodiversity event and fundraiser\, Scott’s team found 48 birds last year. Can you help the team find even more this year? Come join the fun\, enjoy the return of the Valley’s migratory birds\, and benefit the Hitchcock Center\, too! \n\nThe Hitchcock Center’s 18th Annual 2017 Biothon starts May 12th! You’ve heard of marathons\, walk-a-thons\, and dance-a-thons: this is our version. Biothon is a fundraiser for the Hitchcock Center’s environmental education programs. And it’s a fun and educational way to document the biodiversity of our region. Biothon is a team event during peak spring biodiversity. \nTeams choose the time\, location\, and species to count: birds\, plants\, mammals\, reptiles and amphibians\, insects\, or everything! Teams collect pledges in support of their outing. \nTeams will be out identifying species in the Valley at specific sites for any time period (up to 24-hours) on Friday\, May 12 – Sunday\, May 14 or on Friday\, June 2 – Sunday\, June 4. Teams choose their day and time\, where to go out\, and what species to count. \nYour participation helps us to document our region’s biodiversity\, and strengthen high-quality environmental education programs for our whole community – thank you!

SUMMARY:Passive House Tour
DESCRIPTION:with Alexi Arango\nSaturday\, February 4\, 10am\nFREE registration appreciated\n \nA comfortable\, affordable home that doesn’t use a single drop of fossil fuels\, The Potwine Passive House uses 8 times less energy than the typical Massachusetts home while not compromising on style\, affordability\, comfort\, or convenience. Body heat and the sun provide a remarkable 75% of the super-insulated home’s heating needs while efficient lighting\, appliances\, and smart design save electricity all around. The affordable home is the first Certified Passive House in Western Massachusetts. The term “passive house” refers to a modern approach to home design that relies on computer modeling\, new building techniques\, advanced window technology\, and clever energy saving features. In the same way that your thermos holds in heat\, a continuous layer of foam surrounds the home\, even underneath\, to keep the inhabitants warm during the winter and cool during the summer. Award-winning architecture firm GO Logic designed the home to feel spacious and modern on the inside\, despite the modest 1\,100 square foot size\, and clean and elegant on the outside\, using exterior styling cues reminiscent of early New England colonial architecture. The home was built by the Amherst-based firm Integrity Development and Construction and completed in 2015.
