SUMMARY:Spotted Salamander Egg Mass Count - Sold Out
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our annual count of the tennis-ball sized jelly egg masses laid by the female salamanders in the red maple swamp just west of Henry Street. Counting these groups of eggs is a more reliable way of estimating the size of a population for these animals\, since the animals move at various times of night depending on the temperature and rainfall. We start at the north end of the red maple swamp and slowly wade through\, searching for and marking on our data sheets any egg masses that we find.  Water depths vary from a foot to 4 feet but you can bail out if you are getting out of your depth. You are sure to get wet and muddy and have a lot of fun! Training at identifying the egg masses will be provided. It is a unique way to experience nature and learn first hand about these special creatures and their life history. \nAs of 3/27 this program is sold out. DESCRIPTION:with Richard Little\, Geologist\nFriday\, November 3\, 7pm – 8:30pm (indoor presentation)\nSaturday\, November 4\, 9am – 12pm (field trip)\nMembers $32/Non-members $40\nSpace is limited. Register here.\nThe Holyoke Range runs east-west extending to the west from the Amherst area and then curves southward extending across Connecticut. It is composed of more than 400 feet of basalt lava formed during the Age of Dinosaurs’ Jurassic Period. Find out about the development of this significant major landscape feature\, the backbone of the Connecticut River Valley in Massachusetts and Connecticut. You will learn about Pangaea\, flood basalts\, dikes\, sills\, glaciers\, and the development of the Connecticut Valley\, its dramatic topography and Lake Hitchcock. And you will see some fascinating rock formations! Many interesting mysteries will be unraveled in this program.

Over the course of the year we’ll visit a variety of natural habitats in the greater Pioneer Valley area. Identification skills\, ecological connections\, adaptations\, and life cycles of organisms will be the focus of our observations. \nCourse dates and leaders are available here. Bring your curiosity and observation skills and be prepared to spend time outdoors. Dress for the weather as we rarely cancel due to inclement weather. There will be poison ivy\, mosquitoes\, and probably ticks at all sites! Bring a hand lens and be ready to take notes. Walks available separately. Directions to sites provided upon registration.

More common to our north\, bogs are typically high-acid\, nutrient-poor habitats. And the bog plants possess a variety of fascinating adaptations to help them thrive under these conditions. You’ll see insect-eating plants\, the plant that makes peat moss\, and several native orchids!
