Through outdoor activities\, crafts\, games and field trips we’ll become familiar with the amazing variety of dinosaur groups\, become detectives of life past as we learn the techniques of paleontology\, and examine the evidence of dinosaurs that lived right here in western Massachusetts. \nOnline registration opens Tuesday\, June 16. DESCRIPTION:with Patrick O’Roark\, Hitchcock educator\nTuesdays\, September 15 – December 1 (9 classes)\n(No class 10/6\, 11/3 and 11/10)\n10:00am-2:00pm\nAges 9-12 \nJoin us this fall as we travel deep into the past to explore the age of the dinosaurs. Dinosaurs were one of the dominant groups of animals on Earth for 140 million years – that’s 700 times longer than modern humans have existed! This program is part of a series and is not open as a drop-in class. Class meets: September 15\, 22\, 29\, October 13\, 20\, 27\, November 17\, 24\, December 1. Space is limited. SUMMARY:Fungi as Global Citizens
DESCRIPTION:Michael Hood\, Associate Professor and Chair of the Biology Department\, Amherst College\nTuesday\, November 17\, 7-9pm \nMichael researches the impacts of diseases in natural populations\, with a main focus on fungi. He loves discussing this diverse kingdom and the important functions of fungi in the environment. Both saviors and villains\, fungi are vital to many ecosystem services and the establishment of natural communities; while other groups cause diseases in plants and animals\, some rivaling the devastation of The Great Plague. This talk will go beyond fungi as familiar mushrooms\, to discuss ecological interactions of fungi\, whether inducing sex changes in plants\, lassoing microscopic eelworms\, or forming the oldest known symbiosis of life on land. Join Michael for a wide-ranging\, illustrated talk that will reveal the hidden lives of these amazing organisms. Find out more about our local mushrooms through other Hitchcock Center programs this fall. Donations and registration appreciated
