SUMMARY:Balanced and Barefoot Lecture: How Unrestricted Outdoor Play Makes for Strong\, Confident and Capable Children
DESCRIPTION:Angela Hanscom will present a lecture on her recent book\, Balanced and Barefoot: How Unrestricted Outdoor Play Makes for Strong\, Confident\, and Capable Children. Today’s kids have adopted sedentary lifestyles filled with television\, video games\, and computer screens. But more and more\, studies show that children need “rough and tumble” outdoor play in order to develop their sensory\, motor\, and executive functions. Disturbingly\, a lack of movement has been shown to lead to a number of health and cognitive difficulties\, such as attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)\, emotion regulation and sensory processing issues\, and aggressiveness at school recess break. So\, how can you ensure your child is fully engaging their body\, mind\, and all of their senses? \nUsing the same philosophy that lies at the heart of her popular TimberNook program—that nature is the ultimate sensory experience\, and that psychological and physical health improves for children when they spend time outside on a regular basis—author Angela Hanscom offers several strategies to help your child thrive\, even if you live in an urban environment. Today it is rare to find children rolling down hills\, climbing trees\, or spinning in circles just for fun. We’ve taken away merry-go-rounds\, shortened the length of swings\, and done away with teeter-totters to keep children safe. Children have fewer opportunities for unstructured outdoor play than ever before\, and recess times at school are shrinking due to demanding educational environments. With this lecture\, you’ll discover little things you can do anytime\, anywhere to help your kids achieve the movement they need to be happy and healthy in mind\, body\, and spirit. \nThursday\, January 17\, 6pm (snow date: Thursday March 14 at 6pm)\nFriday\, January 18\, 1:30pm (snow date: Friday\, March 15\, 1:30pm)\n*This lecture will be offered twice\, once during the day and once in the evening.\nPlease register here. \nAbout Angela Hanscom\nI’m a pediatric occupational therapist that has taken a unique path in life. Typically occupational therapists are found in buildings (i.e.\, schools\, hospitals\, or clinics) and treat children with attention\, balance\, sensory\, and motor issues. I still help these children\, only I use giant mud puddles\, rope swings that reach new heights\, fallen trees\, and the woods as my medium of choice for treatment and prevention for that matter. \nBefore I became a writer\, I started a developmental nature program in my backyard as an experiment. What started as just an idea\, quickly grew into what is now an internationally recognized brand\, TimberNook\, in just a few short years. Now we can be found throughout the United States and New Zealand. It is through hours of observing children at these camps where the idea for Balanced & Barefoot was born. \nI live in New Hampshire in an antique cape nestled in the woods with my adored husband and three children. My favorite activities are downhill skiing\, reading by the fire\, boating\, traveling\, and taking walks through the woods with my family. My faith and my family are at the core of everything I do. Without them\, there would be no book or TimberNook. My hope is that this book will provide valuable insight into the sensory and motor needs of children for years to come.

SUMMARY:Looking East Community Gallery Exhibit Opening
DESCRIPTION:Looking East\nArtist: Jay Alexander\nOn exhibit January – March 15\, 2019. Exhibit opening January 12\, 11am-1pm.\n \nJay Alexander’s paintings present a contemporary reinterpretation of several dominant themes in classical Chinese painting: the plum\, orchid\, flowering plants\, birds\, and landscapes. He brings his experience and technique to these ancient venerable genres\, depicting the above subjects in the moods\, seasons and light of his environment. These subjects are expressed through his deep attachment to the natural world filtered through a vast body of theory with metaphysical underpinnings—that art is a spontaneous expression\, immediate and irrevocable as life itself\, where the essential truth of a painted object is the operation of the spirit (Chi) in life movement (Zheng tung). \n \nPlum Blossom. Jay Alexander \n\nThis approach to painting is engendered and fostered by the artist’s media—a very porous rice paper combined with the drips\, washes\, ink blots and calligraphic strokes of ink and watercolor. The washes of transparent color capture light and atmosphere\, the bleeding of the rice paper adds expression and accidental effect: lotus pods leak out ink\, blossoms dissolve into branches and mist\, birds gaze into the diffuse sunlight in a watery\, vague environment. \nForm and dissolution—nothing is fixed or stable in this world of water\, ink and paper—layers dissolve into one another and the atmosphere envelopes the subjects in a vibrant\, fluid\, luminous world. Jay Alexander has expanded and reinterpreted these genres into a personalized vision of his environment using the simple media of brush\, ink\, and watercolor \nAbout Jay Alexander\nJay Alexander studied Far Eastern languages\, art\, and architecture at Harvard University and the University of Massachusetts. After finishing his studies\, he started a small graphics company\, and for many years designed and illustrated medical and science college textbooks and developed accompanying animations. Drawing on this graphics experience and his studies in Far Eastern art\, he has devoted himself to expression with the simple media of ink\, watercolor\, and rice paper in the literati tradition of the scholar-painter\, while incorporating aspects of contemporary graphic design. He has exhibited his work in many local venues in the Amherst area and has been selected in several juried shows. His work has appeared in many literary/art publications—The Shanghai Literary Review\, Remembered Arts\, The Hopper Magazine and the A3 Review.

SUMMARY:Christmas Bird Count for Kids and Families
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, December 16\n2-4pm\nFree\, Registration appreciated\n \nDo you want to learn more about birds? Would you like to contribute to science? Join birdwatchers all over America in the Christmas Bird Count (CBC)! The Hitchcock Center is hosting its first ever CBC for kids and their families on Sunday\, December 16 from 2:00-4:00pm. The CBC is a 118-year old event in which bird lovers of all ages and skill levels count all the birds they see in a 24-hour period in December. At this program\, we’ll meet at the Hitchcock Center for an indoor program about how to recognize common birds\, followed by an outdoor bird count. Educator Katie Koerten will facilitate a bird count for kids and their families on the grounds of the Hitchcock Center – we’ll count every bird we see! Stay as long as you wish. Later that evening she will report the data we collect at the official CBC compilation meeting. Don’t miss this opportunity to contribute to a real bird census! This event is rain\, slow\, sleet or shine. Families may stay for as much time as they wish but we recommend you come for the indoor portion in order to get introduced to the common winter species we are likely to see. Binoculars welcome but not required.

SUMMARY:How to Talk About Environmental Issues
DESCRIPTION:Most people spend very little time talking about environmental issues with their colleagues\, friends and family members. Yet research shows that these are exactly the conversations we need to be having in order to promote greater public engagement with the conservation and sustainability challenges we face. Join Ezra Markowitz Umass professor and researcher of Climate Ethics and Intergenerational decision-making and the environment. In this talk\, he will present some of the research he and others have done on the key role of interpersonal communication—everyday social interactions and conversations—in conservation efforts. He will then highlight how this work can be used to support pro-environmental decision-making across a variety of issues. \nwith Ezra Markowitz\, Assistant Professor of Environmental Decision-Making \nDonations and registration appreciated
