SUMMARY:Air Source Heat Pumps – The Latest in Efficient Heating & Cooling
DESCRIPTION:with Center for EcoTechnology\nWednesday\, December 6\, 7- 8:30pm\nFREE\, Registration appreciated\n \nAn air source heat pump is a system which transfers heat from outside to inside a building\, or vice versa. Air at any temperature above absolute zero contains some energy. An air-source heat pump transfers (‘pumps’) some of this energy as heat from one place to another\, for example between the outside and inside of a building. This can provide space heating or cooling. A single system can be designed to transfer heat in either direction\, to heat or cool the interior of the building in winter and summer respectively.

SUMMARY:An Invisible Terror: Birds and Window Collisions
DESCRIPTION:with Brandon Hedrick\, evolutionary and conservation biologist at Harvard University and collaborating scientist with the Hitchcock Center\nFriday\, November 17\, 6:30-7:30 pm\nFREE\, Registration appreciated\nFollowing deforestation\, window collisions are the number one\, human-made cause of bird mortality\, with estimates as high as 1 billion birds per year in the United States alone. By identifying areas that are particularly dangerous for birds\, we can better mitigate this problem by targeting specific windows and locations for intervention. Of particular concern are the glass breezeways connecting buildings. He will also share some of the solutions designed to avoid this problem. Come learn more about the Amherst Bird Strikes Project and how you can help us protect our local and migratory birds. There will be time at the end for questions and comments.

SUMMARY:Swallows in Massachusetts—How You Can Help
DESCRIPTION:with Mara Silver\, Local swallow researcher and dedicated conservationist\nWednesday\, November 15\, 7pm- 8:30pm\nFREE\, Registration appreciated\nSwallows are aerial insectivores\, which means that they catch insects on the wing. Unfortunately\, many species in this group are declining at an alarming rate. We don’t know all the reasons why\, but possibilities include habitat loss\, climate change\, pesticide use\, and increasingly intense agricultural practices. Fortunately there are ways we can help these birds during their four-month breeding season with us. Mara will discuss the natural history of the swallows that breed in western Massachusetts and describe simple techniques she has used to increase breeding success at her study sites.

SUMMARY:Community Gallery Exhibit Opening
DESCRIPTION:Amherst au Naturale: Up Close and Personal\nA Photo Show by Alan Hurwitz at the Hitchcock Center Living Building\nOpening Events:\nWednesday\, November 8th at 5pm and Saturday\, November 11th at 11am\nThis photo exhibit is designed to show some special aspects of our local natural world. All are\nof subjects found right here in Amherst – many captured on the Station Road property of the\nphotographer\, Alan Hurwitz. \nThey are special: by showing aspects of nature we may miss if not paying close attention; as\nbeautiful photographs in themselves; and by many depicting interesting aspects of nature from\nwhich we can learn\, or which will inspire interesting conversations. We can help with that.\nMany are macro images of insects\, some of our fellow mammals\, or birds or reptiles\, common\nor otherwise – most views of them that we don't see all the time. Others are of flowers\, close-\nup or as part of larger scenes. A few show the larger natural context of this scenic area. \nA central purpose of this exhibit\, like the Hitchcock Center itself\, is to inspire educate\, or\nperhaps provoke\, members of the Hitchcock Center and general Amherst communities\, to\ndeepen our awareness of aspects of nature that we may pass unnoticed every day – not paying\nthe attention that these wonderful examples of the wisdom of nature deserve.

SUMMARY:Repair Public: An Experiment in Community Fixery
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, October 22\, 1pm- 4pm\nFREE\, registration appreciated\nRepair Public is an exercise in community resourcefulness. The basic idea is to encourage people to learn how and/or where to fix broken items instead of tossing them into a landfill and buying replacements. There will be repair facilitators on-hand to help you figure out how to fix your treasure\, each with one or more areas of specialty. We’ll have various tools available for use\, as well as some basic supplies like screws\, tape\, glue\, wire nuts\, needles\, threads\, and probably appliance cord with some plug-ends.
