Outdoor Educator April Break

Get outside this Spring with our April Vacation Days! The Hitchcock Center is looking for paid camp counselors for our Spring break vacation days: April 18th-22nd . We are an environmental education center in Amherst Massachusetts. If you enjoy working with children, being outside, and playing in nature, the Hitchcock Center would love to have you work with our educators! This job is perfect for young professionals looking to gain experience in outdoor education, or current educators looking for fun employment over the school break.

At our vacation day programs we will explore the woods, play in the mud and enjoy all the budding life of spring time.  This is mostly out-door program with the option to spend part of the day inside our Living Building classrooms if weather is extreme.  Camp begins at 8:30am and runs until 3pm. We’re looking for counselors that can commit to being with a camp group from Monday through Friday April 18th-22nd.

We are looking for counselors to have some experience with child care and have an interest or experience in outdoor education.

Compensation: $15.00/hour

Main Duties:
Co-lead groups of up to 15 children ages 6-10 outdoor/indoor classroom
Documented proof of immunity or vaccination record as mandated by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.
Teach nature camp activities such as outdoor exploration, nature-themed games, songs, art projects, and science experiments
Promote a positive and healthy environment for all campers.
Be aware of health, safety, well-being and location of campers at all times.

Necessary skills and experience:
Pass Criminal and Sex Offender Record Information background check.
Documented proof of immunity or vaccination record as mandated by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.
Able to accept supervision and guidance.
Able to dress self appropriately to stay outdoors for several hours in Winter conditions.
Maintains enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience and self-control
Ability to work independently and with a co-counselor.
Excellent communication skills and a friendly manner.
Be sensitive to campers’ personalities, differences and needs.

Experiences in the following are a plus:
Passion and curiosity about the natural world.
Working knowledge of New England natural history.
Experience in curriculum development or lesson planning in the natural sciences
Previous experience in camp setting
